OAKLAND (BCN) — Water use at Oakland’s Holy Names University dropped by more than seven million gallons compared with last year, university officials announced Friday. That’s a savings of more than 19,000 gallons a day.
University officials said their success has been due to an effort to repair leaks and the installation of low-flow toilets on campus.
“The University is doing its part to conserve water – which is always important, but especially during a time of such severe and widespread drought,” Stuart Koop, vice president for finance and administration, said in a statement.
The conservation effort is part of the university’s sustainability plans, university officials said.
Those plans also include using solar panels to create energy for the university’s Valley Center for the Performing Arts, reviving on-site spring water irrigation and storage systems, and landscaping with drought tolerant plants, according to the university.
