Oakland teen faces murder charge in accidental shooting

OAKLAND (KRON/BCN) — A 19-year-old man is facing murder charges, after police say he admitted to accidentally shooting another man in the back of the head while playing with a shotgun in an East Oakland apartment.

The shooting happened last Tuesday in the 2700 block of E.C. Reems Court, near MacArthur Boulevard.

The suspect’s father called police and said his son, 19-year-old Isaiah Powell, had accidentally shot another man, according to a probable cause statement by Oakland police Officer Kris McClain. Officers responded to the home and found a young man suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He died at the scene, McClain said.

The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Frank Franz.

Powell was taken into custody. Police say they located the gun he allegedly used and took it into evidence. Police say Powell admitted to investigators that he shot Franz while playing with the gun.

Four other people fled the apartment after the shooting, prompting a search. It’s unclear if investigators have since located the others.

As of Tuesday morning, Powell remained in Santa Rita Jail without bail, according to jail records.
