OAKLAND (KRON)—Some Oakland Raiders fan groups will try to send a message to team owner Mark Davis before Sunday’s game when they hand out 10,000 fliers and hang banners near the O.co Coliseum in Oakland.
The groups are trying to stop the team from going to Las Vegas and they want Davis to know other Northern California fans don’t want them to leave either.
The Raiders will be playing the Denver Broncos at the Coliseum Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
“We’re absolutely not okay with it,” SaveOaklandSports co-founder Jim Zelinski said.
SaveOaklandSports is one of the groups sponsoring the message to Davis. The Oakland Raiders Booster Club and the Stay in Oakland group are also participating in the event.
An airplane will fly over the area between 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
The groups will be handing out signs that read “Stay in Oakland.”
Zelinski said fans are the base of every franchise and those that have been loyal to the team for 44 years should be repaid.
“We’ve done our part,” he said. As far as a fan base, “We have a great one here,” he said.
No final decision has been made on whether the team will leave Oakland, but steps have been taken to convince the team to move to Las Vegas.
In October, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a bill that would provide $750 million to the Raiders to build a stadium.
The National Football League and its owners will make the final decision about where the football team will end up, according to Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf.
