OAKLAND (BCN) — The mother of one of seven suspects facing prosecution in the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old woman last year in West Oakland was also arrested and charged last week, according to court documents.
Joneria Reed, 37, was arrested in Antioch on Thursday for her alleged involvement in the murder of Chyemil Pierce, a West Oakland mother of three.According to court documents, Reed made a phone call to her son
According to court documents, Reed made a phone call to her son and another man that triggered a shootout in the 2800 block of Chestnut Street at about 4:45 p.m. on March 9 in which Pierce was shot.
Both Reed and her son, 21-year-old Dijon Ward, have been charged with being an accessory after the fact in the murder case, which has six other defendants. Reed is additionally facing a charge of conspiracy to commit a murder.
Charged with murder in the case are Julian Ambrose, 17, who is being prosecuted as an adult, Jerry Harbin, 30, Alex Davis, 25, Shelton McDaniels, 29, Michael Stills, 21, and Anthony Sims, 20.
The day of the incident, Reed was allegedly pushed to the ground by Harbin during a dispute and responded by calling Ward and Sims for help, according to court documents.
This led to further confrontation and a gun battle involving Sims, Harbin, McDaniels, Davis and Ambrose, according to prosecutors. A bullet hit Pierce in the back of her head during the shootout.
Stills is not charged with firing a gun during the incident but is accused of being armed with one and prosecutors allege that he’s also legally responsible for the killing.
The firearm Sims is suspected of using was found at the Antioch home where Reed was arrested, according to court documents. Ward allegedly hid it there.
All the male suspects, besides Ward, pleaded not guilty on Aug. 24 to murder charges.
Ward pleaded not guilty the same day to his accessory charge and Reed was in court this afternoon for a scheduled arraignment.
Preliminary hearings in this case have been slated for May 9.
