A deadly intersection in Oakland is now being patrolled by police after a mother and her young son were killed by a hit-and-run driver.
Police are there to get drivers to slow down in an effort to prevent any future tragedies.
The heavy Oakland police presence at the intersection of 26th Avenue and Foothill comes in the wake of Saturday’s deadly hit-and-run killing 6-year-old Angel Garcia Vasquez and his mother Alma.
Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo says the police are here in an effort to remind drivers to slow down for pedestrians in this area.
“So right now in the immediate area, I have seen four officers that are present and will continue to be present and later on you will see the motorcycle officer. We are trying to reduce the traffic speed and you see the signage encouraging people to reduce the speed,” Gallo said.
Anselmo Garcia, the grieving husband and father of the hit-and-run victims says so far it does not appear that drivers are getting the message. KRON4 spoke to him through an interpreter.
“He says in spite of there being a radar and police presence that he hasn’t seen the conditions improve, drivers are still speeding down the street, so right now he is not too sure that this is working,” Garcia said.
His younger brother, 19-year-old Jaime Garcia, was the third hit-and-run victim. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Jaime Garcia is a student at Fremont High School in Oakland.
A fundraising car wash will be held at the school on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to help raise money for the family to pay for funeral expenses.
There is a $25,000 reward for the arrest of the hit-and-run suspect 27-year-old Rasenoch Allen.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Oakland police.
