Oakland family missing in the Sierra found safe

OAKLAND (KRON) — The father and his two children who went missing in the Sierra on Tuesday have been found safe, according to family members.

Nicholas Vlahos, 41, had been camping in western Sierra County with his 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter and were set to come home Tuesday but failed to show up, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to Vlahos’ sister, Katrina Wehmeyer, the family was being airlifted to a local hospital but both children are in ‘good’ condition.

They left their campsite near North Fork in a black 2015 Toyota Tundra 4X4 pickup truck and planned to take a drive through a remote and rugged area of Sierra and Plumas counties as they went home. They were in good health and had plenty of supplies, according to the sheriff’s office.

Vlahos–a barbershop owner– is a skilled outdoors man and veteran camper, according to family members.

Search and rescue crews scoured the area looking for the family, but ceased searching when the sun went down.  Reports of snowfall complicated the search, according to authorities.

Cell phone service is spotty in the area where they went missing, hindering rescue efforts.

Stay with KRON 4 as more details of their rescue are made available.
