OAKLAND (KRON/BCN)—-Oakland City Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan is expected to spend a week at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota to help support tribal rights and access to clean water, her office announced Friday.

Kaplan was recently reelected and will take a stand against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

She recently participated in a pipeline protest outside Oakland City Hall.

“We must defend the water, land and the people,” Kaplan said in a statement. “I am proud to be part of a city that stands up for justice. Together, we have a moral obligation to say no to poisoning our water, no to violence against those being harmed here in North Dakota, and to honor our First Nation’s peoples and represent treaty rights.”

Those against the pipeline being built have been protesting in Standing Rock since the beginning of this year.

Opponents say the pipeline can pollute drinking water on land used by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.

The land is also considered sacred.

Some of the activists were pepper sprayed and shot with rubber bullets earlier this week, according to Kaplan’s office.
