OAKLAND (KRON) – The Oakland city workers strike continued for a third day on Thursday.
About 3,000 Oakland city workers were on strike and picketing for a third day after failing to agree to a new labor contract.
The union and Mayor Libby Schaaf tried to negotiate Wednesday afternoon but didn’t make any progress.
There will be a 2:45 p.m. meeting Thursday at the mayor’s office.
Mayor Schaaf is expected to offer the union a new deal that could possibly end the strike.
The city and union have agreed to a 4 percent salary increase in the first year but are stuck on increases for the second year. The city has offered a 2 percent increase if certain revenue conditions are met, but the union wants the city to commit to another 4 percent increase.
Talks broke down Monday after the city refused a union proposal to bring in an informal mediator.
The unions say they will not go back to the table without a new offer from the city.
The strike is affecting many Oakland city services, including the Head Start program, that many families rely on.
