Clarification for May 18, 2015 Story
Last night [yesterday morning] we aired a story about certain baggage handlers at the Oakland Airport who have been charged with drug smuggling. Our story included background video of persons working at and traveling through the airport. We want to clarify none of the persons shown in the video were persons who have been charged with any wrongdoing.
OAKLAND (KRON)– Three baggage handlers at Oakland International Airport are among 14 people charged with taking part in an alleged marijuana smuggling ring.
U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag said Monday that the baggage handlers are accused of using their security badges to get through screening areas while carrying luggage filled with marijuana.
Haag says once through security, the handlers would hand the luggage to passengers waiting to board planes who would move them as carry-on items to cities throughout the country.
Court documents allege that this group started operating in 2012.
The baggage handlers were identified as Kenneth Wayne Fleming of San Leandro, Keith Ramon Mayfield and Michael Herb Videau of Oakland.
Haag says the three men have been charged with conspiracy to distribute, and possess with intent to distribute, 100 kilograms or more of marijuana.
Southwest Airlines released this statement regarding the arrests:
