OAKLAND (KRON) — The staff at UCSF Children’s Hospital Oakland is mourning the loss of one their beloved nurses who died tragically Wednesday night after she was struck and killed by a vehicle outside the hospital where she had worked for 36 years.
The Alameda County coroner’s bureau confirmed that 66-year-old Patricia Alvarez, of El Sobrante, died after being hit near the hospital, which is located at 747 52nd St. in Oakland, at 11:09 p.m.
“Our entire hospital community is grieving the tragic loss of nurse Patricia Alvarez,” said Nancy Shibata, the hospital’s chief nursing officer.
Patty, as she was known friends and co-workers, was a registered nurse in the hospital’s emergency department and pediatric unit at Summit Medical Center, the hospital said.
She had been with the hospital since 1979.
“She touched many lives here at Children’s, both patients and colleagues. Patty was a mentor and leader to many in her career at the hospital. Our flag is flying at half staff in her memory, and we are extending support and care to her family and our staff during this tragic time,” Shibata said.
