The company reportedly under fire for a massive gas explosion in San Francisco’s Inner Richmond district Wednesday has been identified by Verizon as a third party contractor based out of Florida.

The area around the gas explosion remains closed Thursday morning.

The gas line erupted just before 1:30 yesterday afternoon at a construction site in the area of Geary Boulevard and Parker Avenue.

Firefighters issued evacuations to people residing within one block of the fire.

PG&E managed to cap the ruptured gas line at 3:45 p.m.

No one was hurt, but the fire spread to at least five buildings including a restaurant.

Fire officials say 8 workers with MasTec, based out of Coral Gables, Florida, were doing fiber optic work underground when they hit a gas line and caused the explosion.

In a statement, Verizon says it is grateful for the “brave efforts of all the first responders who ran to the crisis.”

The statement also identifies MasTec as the contractor working at the location. The statement reads in part:

“We understand that MasTec is cooperating with investigators as they determine the root cause of the incident. This fiber installation has been halted pending the outcome of an investigation by local authorities.”

The National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday morning it would be sending a team to the scene to investigate.

KRON4’s Dan Kerman reported that PG&E crews restored gas service near the site and were going door to door to relight pilot lights for more than 300 customers.
