NOVATO (BCN) — A Novato man is the first human West Nile virus case in Marin County this year, the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services reported today.

The 57-year-old man is recovering at home, and it’s unclear where he contracted the virus, public health officials said.

Public Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis said West Nile virus is endemic in Marin County and recurs every year during the summer and fall.

People 50 years of age and older have a higher chance of getting sick and developing complications, and those with diabetes or hypertension are at the greatest risk of serious illness, the Department of Health and

Human Services said.

The virus is transmitted to humans from mosquitoes and there are no medications or vaccines to prevent infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
