NOVATO (BCN) — Novato police arrested a man on suspicion of assaulting an 80-year-old person outside a residence Sunday afternoon, according to police officials Monday.

Anton Scherba, 27, of Novato, was arrested at 6 p.m. in the first block of Joan Ave. in Novato, police said.

A concerned neighbor who heard the altercation around 2:10 p.m. between Scherba and the victim physically restrained Scherba to prevent further attack, police said.

Scherba and the victim were taken to Marin General Hospital where the victim remains, police said.

After Scherba was medically cleared he was booked on $250,000 bail in the Marin County Jail on felony charges of cruelty to a dependent adult and assault with a deadly weapon, both likely to cause great bodily injury, and assault to commit rape, according to the booking log.
