GARDNERTOWN, New York (WTEN) — A police car that exploded Tuesday morning in Gardnertown is under investigation by State Police, ATF, and the FBI.

Police say Officer Taso Karabelas was on patrol when he smelled smoke and called it in the police. As he was getting out of the car, the trunk exploded and the car went up in flames.

The incident happened just before 6 a.m.

The officer was treated and released from the hospital.

A small oxygen tank was in a medical kit in the trunk.

It’s unclear what caused the car to catch fire. Police say no foul play is suspected.
