New street drug 10,000 times as potent as morphine

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A drug new to the streets has been showing up that’s said to be 10,000 times as potent as morphine.

It’s been found in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Ohio. Experts predict it will hit the streets in the Midstate soon, and cause death for users.

It’s called Carfentanil, and it’s a drug meant to be used as a sedative for large animals like elephants. Instead, it’s showing up in heroin.

It’s dangerous for emergency responders too since it can be absorbed through the skin.

Nathan Harig with Cumberland Goodwill EMS says they’ve already been training for it.

“A really, really small amount is enough to start having effects in a human. This is powerful stuff, it’s not meant for humans, it’s an elephant tranquilizer,” he says.
