ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Police, deputies and corrections officers are scrambling around Albuqueruqe trying to find an escaped inmate.
MDC spokesperson Nataura Powdrell-Moore says the prisoner escaped a transport van near downtown Albuquerque Wednesday morning by smashing the van’s window.
Albuquerque Police have identified the suspect as 48-year-old Larry Dohrn.
Powdrell-Moore says the incident happened about 7:40 a.m. near 6th and I-40 while the transport van was on the way to court.
She also says an MDC officer attempted to catch the inmate on foot but was unsuccessful.
Officials say the suspect was then involved in a carjacking between 6th and 7th after he escaped from the transport van. Dohrn was last seen in a Gray Chevy Equinox, NM plate 735TLY. Officials say “Shima” is also written on the vehicle’s side.
The vehicle has been recovered, police say, but Dohrn is still on the run.
Dohrn has an extensive criminal history, with charges in New Mexico for everything from shoplifting and car theft to fraud, forgery and aggravated battery.
Back in 2002, Dohrn was in the news for escaping from an Oklahoma prison. He was caught selling stolen cars in Albuquerque.
Dohrn was supposed to face a judge Wednesday for a scheduling conference related to seven felony charges including car theft. But now, all criminal hearings at District Court involving inmates on that van have been cancelled for the day.
Dohrn had been in custody since he was arrested last month. He was being held on a no bond hold.
Police say the suspect is considered dangerous and are urging anyone with information to call 911.
