OAKLAND (KRON) — New license plate surveillance cameras have been installed at the MacArthur BART station in Oakland.
One is expected to capture the plates of cars coming into the garage, and the other as they exit.
BART police officials have said they are installed to make the garage safer and monitor for criminal activity. The cameras have not been turned on yet.
Some groups are not very happy about these cameras, and on Thursday at the BART board meeting, they spoke up saying they are violating privacy rights.
BART officials agreed to wait to turn them on–for now.
They said they want to put together a group to study the cameras and create a clear policy on what will be collected and who will see the information.
