New Jersey ban on gay conversion therapy to stay in effect

NEW JERSEY (KRON) — The Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to New Jersey’s ban on gay conversion therapy for people under 18 years old.

The justices didn’t many any comments on their decision to turn away a challenge to the ban. Monday’s decision follows a similar decision in 2014 that left California’s ban on so-called gay conversion therapy.

Lower courts dismissed lawsuits challenging the ban, which New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed into law in 2013.

Supporters of the therapy tried to interest the court in the issue by presenting it as a restriction on the free speech rights of counselors and doctors.
