The Alameda Police Department continues to investigate a suspicious death after a body was found in a brush fire on Thursday on Bay Farm Island.
Around 1:51 p.m. the department received reports of a possible body in the fire near Veterans Memorial Park.
Authorities say witnesses used their own personal extinguishers to put out the fire and officers confirmed a body had been burned.
Officials first determined that the body was a middle-aged white woman and there were no signs that she was transient or homeless.
Evidence found in the area led officers to believe the woman was a reported missing Oakland resident.
An autopsy done on Friday morning determined that the death was a result of suicide.
Interviews with family members and further investigation on the scene confirmed the coroner’s early findings.
However, positive identification of the body is pending.
No other details were released out of respect for the family.
