Neighborhood Group Protests Tuesday’s Coit Tower Closure

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Residents and visitors to San Francisco aren’t welcome for a second consecutive day at Coit Tower because a company shooting a commercial there is using a drone.

The non-profit Protect Coit Tower organization is decrying a decision by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to issue a $1,500 permit the the makers of the commercial to make the historic structure off-limits to the public.

Logan Media officials say FAA rules require the public be kept at least 200 feet away from a drone used for filming.

“Coit Tower is a public space that belongs to all people, and it diminishes this treasure to stop people from even seeing Coit Tower because a company wants to use a drone for its commercial, said Protect Coit Tower’s Jon Golinger

The organization says the priority should be to protect the tower, shaped like a fire nozzle to honor the San Francisco firefighters who saved the city after the 1906 earthquake, for public use.
