Woman talks about horror of lava bombs smashing into tour boat in Hawaii

HOUSTON (KTRK/CNN Newsource) – A woman’s paradise vacation in Hawaii turned into a nightmare earlier this month when lava bombs exploded over her tour boat burning her hand, legs and body.

The horrifying moments were caught on video.

Without warning, lava started raining off the Hawaiian coast on July 15.

The bright lava landed in the boat and even burned a giant hole in the roof.

Sitting right below was Houston native Lindsay Rostron and her friend, Lacey Matin.

This was one stop along several days of a dream vacation.

“Everyone saying we got hit by a lava bomb. We didn’t get hit by one lava bomb we got hit by so much,” said Lindsay Rostron.

Rostron said it first sounded like hail.

“It was awesome until it wasn’t and then like I just remember hearing screams and like stuff flying in my face and like I mean it was just it was really scary,” Lindsay Rostron said.

Rostron says in the darkness she froze.

She tried to shield her face from the falling bits of earth.

But ash covered everything.

“So I’m like on the ground like lava flies my face — trying to put my face down and I just remember thinking ‘I’m going to die.’ But I was really actually very calm like I didn’t cry at all,” said Rostron.

By then, the tour had turned chaotic.

Rostron said she feared the boat might capsize.

In all, 22 other people were injured, none of those injuries life-threatening.

Rostron is finally back at home and there are blisters still on her hands.

“I feel like God was there with me and he was going to get me through it. Or if he wasn’t — take me home with them then,” Rostron said.
