The Texas Board of Education voted on Friday to remove Hillary Clinton and other “historical figures” including Helen Keller from the mandatory history curriculum in Texas schools, according to Dallas News.
The vote is an attempt by the board to “streamline” what students learn in social studies classes, according to the publication.
Students in Texas high schools have been required to learn about Clinton in history class.
Under a section about citizenship, students were assigned to “evaluate the contributions of significant political and social leaders in the United States” including Clinton, Thurgood Marshall, and Andrew Carnegie.
Officials say removing figures including Clinton, the first female presidential nominee of a major party, would not prohibit teaching about them, but doing so is not required.
Friday’s vote was not final and amendments can be made to the curriculum before the final vote in November.
