(CNN) — Ready-to-eat salads have been recalled from popular grocery stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s due to concerns about corn contaminated with salmonella and listeria, the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service has reported.

Manufacturers that have recalled products include:

  • GHSE, LLC recalled a salad product that was sold in retail locations in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina
  • Mary’s Harvest Fresh Foods, Inc have recalled one salad and one wrap product shipped to retail locations, including Trader Joes, in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
  • GH Foods Ca, LLC have recalled four salad products that were sold only in California retail locations, which included Whole Foods.
  • Prime Deli Corporation has recalled two salad products that were shipped to retail locations in Texas.

GHSE, LLC have recalled over 700 pounds of their Marketside™ Fiesta Salad with Steak as part of the recall.

“The problem was discovered on Oct. 15, 2018, when GHSE, LLC received notification that the corn used in the production of their ready-to-eat salad product was being recalled by their corn supplier due to Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella concerns,” the statement said.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators. Consumers who have purchased the products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” FSIS advised.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella causes an estimated 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths per year.

Its symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps that occur 12 to 72 hours after infection and it usually lasts four to seven days. Most frequently, people who have contracted salmonella recover without treatment, however, some people may have such severe diarrhea they need to be hospitalized.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which the CDC estimates causes 260 deaths and 1,600 infections per year. Those most at risk are pregnant women and their newborns, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

In pregnant women, symptoms often include fever and flu-like symptoms. For other groups, symptoms can include headache, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions and stiff neck. Symptoms usually appear one to four weeks after eating the contaminated food, however there have been reports of symptoms appearing anywhere between the day of consumption to 70 days after. Antibiotics are used to treat listeriosis.
