A woman in Omaha, Nebraska says she found two black widow spiders in her produce right as she reached inside the bag.
The woman says she found them in her bag of grapes Thursday as she was reaching in to eat one.
She drove to Fontenelle Forest, a nature preserve, to find someone who knew what to do with the spiders. Molly Mullen, who works at the forest, said it was “obvious” these were black widows.
Fontenelle Forest says the same thing happened last December.
“All three of them have been found in grapes in local Omaha metro grocery stores over the past few months,” Mullen said.
Mullen said 7-800 people in America find black widows in their grapes every year.
The woman bought the grapes at a Hy-Vee, and store representatives say they refunded the woman’s money.
Naturalist Debbie Beck with Fontenelle Forest said black widow bites can cause swelling and numbness but are rarely deadly.
“They say that black widow venom is about 14 times stronger than rattlesnake venom,” she said. “However, their jaws are so weak, and they’re so timid. They’re not aggressive, that bites aren’t that common.”
