A man was mauled to death by a wounded bear on Wednesday after he attempted to take a selfie with the animal, according to a report from the Hindustan Times.
Prabhu Bhatara and a group of friends were returning from a wedding when he stopped to use the bathroom in the Nabarangpur district of Odisha, India.
That’s when he spotted the injured animal.
The Hindustan Times reports, other passengers in the SUV tried to stop Bhatara, but his mind was made up.
The bear charged at Bhatara, killing him after a brief struggle.
Forest officials said he died at the scene.
Authorities say his companions watched and recorded the entire incident on their cellphones instead of trying to help.
