College students in California may soon have the opportunity to get two years of community college for free.
On Tuesday, officials announced Assembly Bill 2, which would add a second year to the California College Promise.
Gov. Jerry Brown signed the promise last year, which waives the first year of community college tuition for full-time students.
The program applies to first-time students enrolled in at least 12 credits, provided that they have completed a federal student aid application or California Dream Act application.
Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), who authored the bill, says it is not restricted to California residents.
There’s also no income requirement.
It does not cover other costs related to attending college such as textbooks and/or student fees.
