(BCN) – The National Weather Service Wednesday night issued a Beach Hazards Statement for coastal parts of the Bay Area.

A large storm system extending across the central Pacific Ocean has brought long period swells of up to 12 feet to coastal waters, according to the National Weather Service.

Large breaking waves are expected in coastal areas through tonight, and swimmers should be cautious of large breaking waves in shallow water.

Beaches from Sonoma County south to Monterey County will be affected.
