Officials with the Colorado National Monument are asking for the public’s help to stop people who have been defacing the landmark with graffiti.

Several photos posted on the monument’s Facebook page show graffiti painted on the rocks recently.

“I promise to love you forever,” was spray painted in one photo, while another read “You’re perfect.”

“These are such lovely notes but they have also ruined even Lovelier places in nature. I would be so upset if someone did this for me, I would much rather have a card instead of permanently marking up national parks,” wrote one person.

“Guess they haven’t heard of a Hallmark card,” wrote another.

In another photo, the word “PROM…ISE?” can be seen, and people were quick to chime in saying the graffiti was a supposed “promposal.”

“I hope she said no,” wrote one person.

“… local high schools need to be talked to…. maybe have an assembly and talk about the important of these things,” suggested another person.

Under the Code of Federal Regulations, vandalism of national parks is considered a federal misdemeanor punishable by 3 to 6 months in prison and up to a $500 fine.
