SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco Rep. Nancy Pelosi reclaimed her role Thursday as speaker as Democrats reclaim the house.
The 116th Congress is the most diverse in American history.
“House Speaker Pelosi takes over an energized democratic majority with more women serving in congress than ever before,” said Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.
Brown says many of the women in Congress are disciples of Pelosi.
“I think that we have the number of women because of Nancy Pelosi and Nancy Pelosi’s leadership,” said Brown.
Brown says Pelosi’s work as a congresswoman combined with her family’s history makes her perfect for this moment
“Nancy Pelosi is the only person who appears to be focused on trying to do right pursuant of this democracy with mutual respect for everybody,” said Brown.
Meanwhile, Bay Area women lead the way in representing California in congress.
Pelosi is joined by U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris. Brown says it shows Northern California having a surplus of leadership.
“In my opinion it will be that way for a very long time,” Brown said.
