The cougar was seen in the 3300 block of Woodside Court, near the Lafayette Reservoir Recreation Area.

Police are now stepping up patrols in the area and are recommending that residents check on their pets.

Residents who see a mountain lion should stay calm and slowly walk backward, standing up tall.

Mountain lions avoid contact with people, but anyone who comes across one should never crouch down, run away or approach the animal.
