The Monta Vista High Schooll robotics team is celebrating after their stolen robot was returned.
“We’re really glad that whoever had the robot decided to leave it somewhere so someone would find it, we’re glad that it’s back.”
KRON4 told you about what happened following a competition last Saturday in Utah.
The robot, known as El Toro 21 took 7th place out of 52 teams, the u-haul trailer carrying the robot, spare parts and all the team’s tools was stolen dashing hopes of competing in the next competition in Idaho.
But days later the robot was found on someone’s front lawn and Friday afternoon it arrived back in Cupertino for a rigorous round of testing.
“I think it’s in pretty good shape, it’s a little rusted, I assume it was left out in the rain a little bit, so we’re going to have to replace the screws and the bearings.”
Yet despite the rain and the rust, once connected to a battery, the electronics were still humming and it was elevator component was still able to work. More testing needs to be done but this group is ready to work around the clock.
“Now that it’s back I think we have this fire back in us and we’re totally ready to win in Idaho.”
The community has also come through raising $7K in less than a week. That money will go to replacing stolen tools and parts, next to getting this robot up to speed to compete in the next competition August 28th in Idaho.
