PEARLINGTON, Miss. (AP) – Authorities say a Mississippi teenager, who pulled over to help a woman look for a stray dog, was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk tells The Sun Herald 19-year-old Joby Bennett of Pearlington stopped his pickup Saturday night to help the woman.

Faulk says the vehicle missed Bennett’s truck but struck him and the woman who were standing in the emergency lane. He says the woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Chase Elkins with the Mississippi Highway Patrol says the 35-year-old woman is recovering from broken bones.

Elkins said the dog Bennett and the woman were looking for was a stray.

He says the accident is still under investigation.
