UPDATE: Shelter in place lifted.
MILPITAS (KRON) — Police have detained a suspect Tuesday morning after finding chemicals inside his Milpitas home that could be used to make a bomb.
A SWAT team was called to serve a search warrant at a home on View Drive around 8 a.m. following a police investigation about chemicals inside that could be used to make explosives, Milpitas police Sgt. Bryan Hinkley said.
The home under investigation and a home nearby has been evacuated, Hinkley said.
A shelter-in-place was lifted around 6:22 p.m. for 15 other homes in the area.
The investigation began about two or three weeks ago when neighbors reported a strong odor coming from the home.
Firefighters and police were able to gather evidence confirming the odor and collected samples of the chemicals and gave it to the Santa Clara County bomb squad. After testing the chemicals, the bomb squad found the chemicals could be used to make a bomb. They obtained a search warrant Tuesday morning with the help of sheriff’s deputies and Fremont police officers, Hinkley said.
Police have searched the homes of Fremont residents who are associated with the suspect, Hinkley said.
Officers are conducting a through search of the home as a precaution. The search could last for the rest of the day and possibly go until Wednesday.
There is no apparent threat and no injuries were reported, according to police.
