GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – A 4-year-old and 17-year-old were shot during a drive-by on Grand Rapids’ northeast side Thursday afternoon.
The 17-year-old was shot in the arm and the 4-year-old’s knee was grazed by a bullet. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to Grand Rapids Police Department Sgt. Terry Dixon.
Just before 3 p.m., shots were fired from a dark-colored SUV at two locations along Leonard Street NE. GRPD says the target was the 17-year-old boy, who bicycling west on Leonard near Houseman Avenue. The 4-year-old, who was walking with relatives, was an innocent bystander.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many shots were fired. Police said they don’t yet know the reason behind the shooting.
“This is just one of those random situations,” Dixon said. “We really don’t know exactly why this incident took place.”
He said police are still investigating.
Residents said the sound of gunshots is unusual in their neighborhood, in which there are many homes and apartments, as well as Vitale’s restaurant and a Family Fare grocery store.
There is not yet a specific suspect description.
