Meeting to discuss possible relocation of Alcatraz ferry

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The National Park service is holding a meeting this afternoon for the public to discuss a possible relocation for Alcatraz Island’s ferry port.

The relocation options include moving it back to it’s original spot on Pier 41, moving it to Fort Mason’s Pier 3, or keeping it at it’s existing Pier 31 1/2.

Ferry contracts have to be renewed every 10 years and the new contracts have necessitated location changes in the past, most recently in 2006, park service officials said.

Two of the options are along the Embarcadero, which is conducive to tourism.  Park officials fear moving it to Fort Mason will have negative environmental impact, and generate too much traffic to the area.

If the site were to move, it would require extensive improvements, including rebuilding the existing piers.

This afternoon’s meeting will be held in the Bayside Conference Room at Pier 1 at 4 p.m. There will be a tour of the three sites on Thursday.
