McDonald’s: We swear those ‘Minions’ aren’t swearing

OAK BROOK, Ill. (KRON/AP) – Some parents are unhappy with a talking toy included in McDonald’s new Happy Meal.

On July 3 the fast-food giant introduced a new Happy Meal with toys inspired by the widely anticipated movie “Minions.” But customers have since lodged complaints saying the yellow Minion toy figures make noises that sound like curse words.

The Oak Brook, Illinois-based chain issued a statement saying the sounds the figures make are nonsense words, nothing offensive or profane. It says that the Minion Caveman toy makes three sounds – “para la bukay,” ”hahaha” and “eh eh.” The company says there are no plans to take the Happy Meal toy out of distribution.

A toy acquired by The Associated Press made a sound that could be interpreted as an obscene phrase commonly abbreviated as “WTF.”

McDonald’s says “a very small number of customers” have been in touch with the company about the toy. The company says the promotion is scheduled to run through the end of July.

“Our goal at McDonald’s is to serve up food and fun for our valued customers, and we’re glad to have the Minions on board,” the company said.

“Minions,” a prequel of the “Despicable Me” movies, premieres Friday.
