(KRON) — Mark Zuckerberg is a dad, and to celebrate he pledged 99 percent of his Facebook shares to “curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities.”
The social media mogul and his pediatrician wife, Priscilla Chan, made the announcement in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
“We will give 99% of our Facebook shares — currently about $45 billion — during our lives to advance this mission,” Zuckerberg said.
The couple’s donation will leave them with $450 million in shares.
The couple’s letter to their daughter focused on advancing human potential and promoting equality.
“While headlines often focus on what’s wrong, in many ways the world is getting better. Health is improving. Poverty is shrinking. Knowledge is growing. People are connecting. Technological progress in every field means your life should be dramatically better than ours today,” his post read.
It’s not clear when and where his daughter Max was born, but the couple posted a pic presumably taken in their Silicon Valley home.
Zuckerberg, 31, previously announced that the couple had suffered three miscarriages over the last two years. He acknowledged in an earlier post that many people are reluctant to speak publicly about miscarriages. But he said he and Chan, 30, decided to share the information after hearing from friends who had similar experiences and ultimately were able to have children.
