A South Carolina man who allegedly bit his ex-girlfriend’s lip so hard it had to be removed has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The suspect, Seth Aaron Fleury, entered a guilty plea Thursday to a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to 13th Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins.
The incident happened nearly a year ago on Oct. 21, 2017 when Fleury and his ex agreed to meet to “discuss their relationship,” but rather it turned into a disagreement.
According to a public statement, Fleury became angry when his ex did not want to get back together with him.
Then he tried to kiss her.
“She pulled away and he bit down on her bottom lip with such force that her lip was amputated,” according to the statement.
Fleury then fled the scene.
According to Wilkins, doctors tried to “reattach her lip” during “emergency plastic surgery,” but were unsuccessful.
Wilkins says now the victim endures “permanent, serious scarring and permanent, limited range of motion in her mouth.”
“This case demonstrates the unique circumstances under which domestic violence occurs, and how quickly these situations can escalate into violence,” Wilkins said in the public statement. “Hopefully this prison sentence will make it clear to both this defendant and other abusers that domestic violence in any fashion will not be tolerated.”
Officials say Fleury will not qualify for parole until at least 85 percent of his prison term is completed.
