SANTA CLARITA (AP) – Authorities say a man walked into a Los Angeles County sheriff’s station soaked in gasoline and tried several times to set himself on fire but failed.

A sheriff’s statement says the 26-year-old man from Lake Piru walked into the lobby of the Santa Clarita Valley Station Friday.

He tried to use a lighter on himself as a deputy at the front desk tried to stop him.

But the lighter didn’t work, and the man exited the lobby and drove away in a pickup truck.

The statement says deputies followed him, pulled him over and detained him.

He was washed off and taken to a hospital for evaluation.
