SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A 19-year-old man and 24-year-old woman were arrested Thursday for allegedly trying to steal a cell phone. One of the would-be robbers suffered minor eye injuries after he was hit in the face with pepper spray.

The incident happened at around 11:05 p.m. in the area of San Jose and Ocean avenues, according to San Francisco Police Department logs.

Police said the victim, a 30-year-old man, was looking down at his cell phone when he was approached by a man and woman. The male suspect grabbed the man’s phone and punched him in the eye.

The victim then pepper-sprayed the assailant in the face and both suspects fled on foot.

The victim was following suspects when the woman told him she would stab him with a knife.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested the couple. The male suspect refused to be transported to the hospital for treatment to his bruised eye, police said.

The victim’s phone was recovered.
