MONTEREY COUNTY (BCN) — A man fatally struck by a car and a big-rig on U.S. Highway 101 in Prunedale earlier this month has been identified as 50-year-old Johnathan Whiting from New York, according to the Monterey County coroner’s office.

On Sept. 3 around 5:30 a.m., officers were informed of a man walking near the center divider on northbound Highway 101 at Messick Road near state Highway 156, CHP officials said.

It appeared the man, later identified as Whiting, was running south in the lanes and was ranting, raving and waving his hands in the air, according to the CHP.

Whiting was struck by the front of a northbound 2001 Honda Accord driven by a 34-year-old Soledad man, who tried to swerve to avoid a collision, CHP officials said.

Whiting landed in a lane and was then run over by a big-rig, according to the CHP.

Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the collision with the Honda driver, who was not injured, according to the CHP.
