LIVERMORE (KRON) — A man shot and killed himself early Thursday morning outside the Livermore Police station, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. near Dolores Street and Pacific Ave, according to Livermore Police.
Police received a report of a missing suicidal adult armed with a gun, but were unable to locate him at first.
Then around 3 a.m., officers noticed the suicidal person was sitting in his car just outside the police station’s back gate.
When police attempted to conduct a welfare check, they noticed he was armed with a shotgun.
Officers immediately retreated backwards and the suspect began firing his weapon, hitting the back window of his car.
Officers returned fire as they believed he was shooting at them.
After a short time of calling out to the man and not getting a response, officers approached the car and discovered the man was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The 66-year-old man was suicidal and had a history of mental illness, police said. In the incident, the police officer also fired four shots.
No officers were injured in the shooting, according to police.
Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy in officer-involved shootings, Ofc. Art Rosas said.
