SAN JOSE (BCN) — A Redwood City man pleaded guilty last week to carrying out a plot to defraud fruit and vegetable vendors of more than $1.5 million of produce, federal prosecutors said.
Remon Daniel admitted via his guilty plea in federal court in San Jose on Wednesday that from 2014 until he was arrested on Feb. 25, he defrauded nearly 40 businesses, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Daniel’s scheme involved ordering produce by claiming he was an employee of a legitimate wholesaler in Northern California. He would order the fruits and vegetables on credit knowing he did not have the money to pay for them or even the intention of paying for them, prosecutors said.
The companies Daniel ordered from were mainly in California, Arizona and Texas, prosecutors said.
Daniel is being held in the county jail until his sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 19.
He faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of $250,000 or two times the gross gain or loss from the fraud, plus
