UPDATE: 7:50 P.M. – The California Highway Patrol tweeted that the 280/101/680 interchange in San Jose has been reopened, the distraught subject has been taken into custody.
SAN JOSE (KRON) — Police activity has shut down the southbound Interstate 680 connector ramp to southbound Highway 101 in San Jose on Monday afternoon.
The interchange was closed at about 1:15 p.m. after callers began to report a distraught person on the freeway. Traffic was diverted leaving motorists looking for alternate routes.
KRON 4 viewers sent photos showing a man sitting on the wall of the ramp and looking into his hands, his legs dangling several feet above the roadway below. One of the photos shows a couple of people standing on the empty freeway looking up towards the man.
The CHP said acquaintances of the man were trying to persuade him to come down, but the man stopped talking with them.
CHP officers and San Jose police are working to negotiate with the man to find a “peaceful resolution,” CHP Officer Ross Lee said.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and to avoid the area. There is no estimated time to reopen the roadway.
