PHOENIX (AP) – A man opened fire in the lobby of a Phoenix motel and then again in the parking lot before carjacking vehicles and finally shooting himself, ending a string of crimes that left two people dead and two other victims wounded, police said Monday.
The unidentified suspect was hospitalized in extremely critical condition, and police do not know a motive for the attacks in northwest Phoenix, Officer James Holmes said.
The gunman shot three men, including two employees, in the motel Sunday night, killing one worker and another man, Holmes said. He then shot and wounded a man and woman in a pickup truck in the motel parking lot and fled.
The suspect stole a vehicle at gunpoint in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex. He abandoned that car when it broke down and then stole another at gunpoint, police said.
The suspect crashed the second vehicle after driving down a dead-end street in south Phoenix, and he shot himself in the head when confronted by police in a field about a dozen miles from the motel, Holmes said.
The wounded motel employee was in extremely critical condition, while the other two victims had wounds that were not life-threatening, police said.
No identities have been released.
