VIRGINIA (KRON) — A man accused of gunning down a shopper at a Virginia supermarket yesterday is speaking out to news officials during a live interview today.

The suspect is identified as Brian Hicks, who shot and killed a 34-year-old, Gabriel Maness, with an unclear motive. Hicks told reporters that “God told him to do it”.

Police say the two men did not know each other and there didn’t seem to be an argument before the shooting.

Sources say, Hicks was a retired Air Force Veteran and was armed with a 45 caliber handgun.

Police say Hicks opened fire inside the supermarket on aisle six, and they say there is no surveillance video on the shooting.

During a jailhouse interview, Hicks rambled about religion, none of which was understood. “I was in the spirit. I was in confusion. The spirit of confusion. Your God, my father, made me kill my best friend. I’m coming to you on bended knees.”

Police officials are still unclear about the fatal shooting, it is believed that mental illness is involved on Hicks’ part.

Hicks is being held without bond and has a preliminary hearing May 26th.CNN contributed to this report.
