OAKLAND (KRON) — Police were on the scene in Oakland where a man in a wheelchair has died after setting off a pipe bomb, police said Tuesday night.

There were concerns more explosives could be in the area, but the scene is now clear.

It happened in Oakland on International Boulevard reportedly inside the San Antonio Neighborhood Health Center.

Police say it appears the man set off the pipe bomb intentionally, taking his own life.

A search was underway looking for any other explosive devices.

At 6:26 p.m., Oakland police responded to an initial report of a person shooting himself in the head at the health center, located at 1030 International Blvd, according to Oakland Officer Wesley Huynh.

When units arrived, they found one deceased male.

The Oakland Police Department was investigating this death as an apparent suicide “by means of pipe bomb.”

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad also responded to this incident.

Officer Huynh said he was unaware of any additional injured parties. He could not confirm if there was any damage to the building.

Officer Huynh was also unaware of any active evacuation or shelter-in-place orders, he said.

He said he believes that the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau has taken possession of the body.

Although this is an Oakland police incident, Sgt. Ray Kelly, with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed to KRON4 that the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad units were involved in the investigation.

Bomb squad units were checking the scene for any secondary explosive devices. The concern was “public safety.”

Sgt. Kelly said the man reportedly was in a wheelchair and that the explosion occurred inside the building.

No other injuries were reported.
