A California man made an emotional discovery over the weekend when he returned to survey what was left of his family’s home after the Carr wildfire.
Jerry Ogle says he was sifting through the rubble of his home with his father when he started looking for his grandmother’s wedding ring. According to Ogle’s Facebook page, his grandfather gave him the ring before he passed away.
“My only real hope was that I would miraculously find the diamond in the ash,” he said in a Facebook post.
After about a half hour of searching, Ogle says he looked to the sky and asked his grandfather for help.
“Not 30 seconds later I found the box, the same box that it was given to me in,” Ogle said.
Inside the box covered in ashes, Ogle found his grandmother’s ring. Although the band is a bit damaged, the diamond appears to be intact.
“God is good,” he wrote. “Thank you for the help grandad!”
Ogle has now set up a GoFundMe to help raise money for his neighborhood. Ogle first set the page up for his family, but said Tuesday he’s shifting the goal to “a greater cause.”
“It has come to my attention that some of the residents in the neighborhood didn’t have any kind of fire coverage. So with every dollar that is donated, the proceeds will go to the renovations of as many people as we can help in the neighborhood,” he wrote in an update.
So far, the GoFundMe has raised more than $7,000.
