CASTROVILLE, Calif. (BCN) — A 56-year-old man was fatally shot in Castroville Friday, marking the second fatal shooting that has occurred in the town within the last week.

The shooting occurred at an apartment located at 10180 Merritt St., according to Monterey County sheriff’s officials.

The victim, later identified as Filiberto Fernandez, was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff’s officials said.

The victim’s 27-year-old son suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital. A third person escaped injury.

Deputies believe the shooting was gang-related, according to sheriff’s officials.

On Monday, a 26-year-old Fresno man was fatally shot in the 11500 block of Speegle Street around 11:30 a.m.

The victim, later identified as Jose Luis Cortez, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were also shot but survived, sheriff’s officials said.

No suspects were arrested in connection with Monday’s shooting.
