AUSTIN (KXAN) – A 22-year-old man is behind bars on felony charges after breaking into the window of the Texas Capitol and damaging a painting inside early Sunday morning
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Tanner Christian Graeber, 22, of Fort Worth, was spotted around 3:27 a.m. by a DPS trooper entering a temporary wooden walkway that was in place due to renovations.
Moments later, Graeber was seen climbing the scaffolding on the south side of the building. While on the second floor area, DPS says he broke a window and made his way inside.
DPS says Graeber intentionally damaged a portrait of former Governor Fletcher Stockdale, who served in 1865 from May until August.
A trooper and Capitol Security Officer found Graeber inside the Capitol and arrested him without incident.
He has been booked into the Travis County Jail and faces charges of burglary and criminal mischief equal to or greater than $2,500 but less than $30,000. According to the Associated Press, he could face up to two years on each charge if convicted.
